As the movie TRILOGY idea takes shape, I randomly think about having some story boards as well. They look like graphic books. Wait a minute, graphic books is what I just thought about? How about if I actually turn the treatments into graphic books first, and if the appeal is there (i.e. someone acquiring the rights), make them later into movies. But talking about rights, to what extent am I infringing on the copy rights of the authors’ original books or their publishing houses. And at this thought I kind of see a show stopper. Am I actually writing an “adaptation” or a “based on…” story, if that matters? Could I use the names of the characters in the original books or do I have to change them? Shall I continue the “project” or find out first about the copyrights? I do not know the answer to the former but to the last one I do, the project will go on. And the new question is about the style of the treatment: will I write about, or describe the movie scenes. The treatment’s theory says that one has to write “about” the movie, but if I want to publish the illustrated books first then it’s better to describe. This would make it easier to further reduce the treatment to key images and brief bubble texts. Thus, I decide to describe the scenes. Also, for a TRILOGY to be justified, I need a unique character, a reason for him to appear in different centuries and some sort of a common thread in the society’s development. For the unique character I am thinking about my son’s nickname, for his “longevity” a reincarnation scenario in the 12th, 17th and 21st centuries and for the common thread in society the preeminence of war, religion, science and love. I’ll have to make sure that these key aspects are notable in some key scenes and dialogue of each treatment. I had started looking for a graphic book illustrator by asking my wife first, then close friends, thus still looking…However, the first question they asked caught me off guard… (To be continued)
